The publication of the 3rd Carbon Disclosure Report (Global News Item 4) was one of several significant events focusing on climate change and carbon disclosure in the last two months. A series of launches around the world marked the release of CDP3, including one in Hong Kong hosted by ASrIA (Asian News Item 2). On a similar theme, KLD Indexes has engaged Sunrise Advisors to market their KLD Global Climate 100SM Index (GC100) in Japan (Asian News Item 6) and Climatefund.org launched a service with the aim of making it simple and affordable for individuals and businesses to reduce their climate footprints to zero (Global News Item 5). IIGC and Carbon Trust commissioned Mercer Investment Management to produce a guide for pension trustees on climate change risks (Global News Item 10). Two important upcoming event will be Carbon Finance 2005: Risks and opportunities in emissions markets (Global News Item 12) to be held in London, and Fuel Choice Asia (Asian News Item 10), to be held in Hong Kong, which is a senior-level conference designed to address the strategic issues surrounding fuel supply selection & diversification. A strong focus for ASrIA in the coming two months are supply chain and labour issues, the highlight of which will be a series of related events in Tokyo in November. The keynote event will be a half-day public conference on Nov 10, with the theme of Supply Chain Risks and Opportunities in Asia, hosted by Keizai Doyukai and primary sponsor Daiwa Securities Group (Asian News Item 1).

1. ASrIA CONFERENCE, SUPPLY CHAIN RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN ASIA
Keizai Doyukai, one of Japan's leading associations of top business executives, is hosting the ASrIA conference on Supply Chain Risks and Opportunities in Asia. The event will be held at the Akasaka Prince Hotel on 10 November with Daiwa Securities Group as the primary sponsor. There will be key note presentations by leading experts on CSR and labour issues in China and the region. The event is an important and unique opportunity for investors, corporates and civil society leaders to discuss the implications of supply chain issues to corporates and investors, to learn about best practice in managing supply chain labour relations and how worker expectations are evolving. 2. ASrIA BRIEFING MARKS THE LAUNCH OF THE CARBON DISCLOSURE PROJECT 2004
To mark the launch of CDP3 Gail Kendall, China Light and Power's Group Director for Environment, gave a very clear and well received presentation on this complex subject, explaining the underlying issues, the extent to which companies can respond to them, and the implications for investors. 3. ASrIA LAUNCHES SRI GUIDE FOR CONSUMERS, NGO'S AND STUDENTS
ASrIA has launched it's very own colourful and interactive website for individual and young investors, civil society members and consumers. The site provides easy to follow explanations of SRI and provides resources for learning more about the issues.

4. HUMAN RIGHTS SITE SPOTLIGHTS CHINESE MANUFACTURER LINKED TO FORCED LABOUR
The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre brought attention to an article alleging Chinese firm Henan Rebecca uses forced labour and drawing links to foreign investment banks and client investment activity. The report balances the allegations with responses from banks implicated through investment for their clients.

5. JAPAN'S SUSTAINABILITY DOWN 19%
The environmental NGO Japan for Sustainability (JFS) has chosen 20 headline indicators for sustainability based on an analysis of over 200 data sets in several sustainability-related categories. This is the first ever numerical evaluation / trial calculation of national sustainability for Japan. Results show sustainability in Japan has declined about 19% since 1990.

7. GRAMEEN FOUNDATION USA SURVEY OF FINANCIAL PROFESSIONALS

8. AUSTRALIAN PENSION FUND VICSUPER CEO WINS INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
A total of 33 individuals were nominated for the SAM/SPG Sustainability Leadership Award 2005. 10. FUEL CHOICE ASIA 2005
5-7 December, Hong Kong. The region's top-level conference to focus on fuel choice for power generation. 11. THE SUPPLY CHAIN TALKS BACK

1. US SRI RETIREMENT PORTFOLIOS HAVE MORE OPTIONS TO DIVERSIFY

2. CalSTRS FOLLOWS CALVERT BLUEPRINT ON MONEY MANAGER DIVERSITY

AccountAbility has launched an exposure draft of the first international standard for stakeholder engagement: the AA1000SES, on 22 September. The standard is a principle-based, open-source framework that offers coherent and practical guidance for designing, implementing, and assuring the quality of stakeholder engagements.

4. $21 TRILLION INVESTOR COALITION SPURS GREATER AWARENESS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AMONG U.S. CORPORATIONS
More U.S. corporations than ever before now factor climate change into the risks and opportunities faced by their businesses, according to a report released by the Carbon Disclosure Project, a coalition of institutional investors with more than $21 trillion in assets. Increased interest from the investment community, in conjunction with related macro-economic developments, is encouraging the development of strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

8. ARTHUR D LITTLE STUDY IDENTIFIES TRENDS IN SUSTAINABILITY INNOVATION
The study, entitled Innovation High Ground: How Leading Companies are Using Sustainability-Driven Innovation to Win Tomorrow's Customers, surveys 40 technology companies across Europe, the US, and Japan. 9. REPORT FINDS YOUNG SELL-SIDE ANALYSTS FAIL TO FILL VOID IN SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEPFI) recently surveyed young analysts to see if sustainability is taking root. The survey expected to find the analysts eagerly assessing environmental, social, and governance issues in their recommendations but discovered the exact opposite. They found that young analysts appear unconvinced over the materiality of most environmental, social, and governance issues to business; unable to consider them because of inadequate information, training, or tools; and unwilling to depart from business as usual because of conflicts with remuneration, career advancement, or culture. http://www.asria.org/news/press/1124694075
